I catch Chelsea Lopez just after her return from the Venice Film Festival, which she describes as “so cool. But I ate so much pasta I never want to eat pasta again.” Venice begins a string of festival appearances for this rising star—she has no less than three features slated for release this year. A New Jersey native, Lopez is now bicoastal. She started acting at seven years old, and her first film found her co-starring alongside Sam Shepard: “I was a child actor. It was always fun for me, though. It never felt like work…. It’s second nature to me.”
Lopez gravitates toward the indie film scene, explaining, “In the film that was just in Venice, Are We Not Cats (directed by Xander Robin), I play a young woman who pulls out her hair and falls in love with a guy who has the same disorder that she has. She wears a wig to disguise it. It was a really dark, kind of psychedelic film.” Her other upcoming projects sound just as fascinating and diverse, including Blood Heist, in which she plays a prostitute alongside James Franco; a found-footage, untitled VHS film, executive produced by Ridley Scott and based on The Phoenix Lights UFO sighting, and Novitiate, directed by Margaret Betts, in which she plays a young nun in the 1960s.
Besides acting, Chelsea is passionate about a number of other mediums. “I love to take photos of my friends,” she says. “it’s more personal. I also love writing, painting.” Range is certainly a term that applies to Lopez’s budding career across the arts. ★
